A challenging situation and various issues
In Constanța, Romania, the Auchan supermarket was facing significant bird-related pressure on its roof, which was equipped with solar panels.
More than 400 seagulls were causing damage across the 1.5-hectare roof, particularly from February through July, resulting in significant damage to the installations and high maintenance costs.
The massive presence of birds resulted in more than €20,000 in economic losses each year, primarily due to:
- damaged or broken solar panels
- a significant buildup of bird droppings on the panels and roof surfaces
- a significant drop in the photovoltaic systems’ output due to fouling
- frequent and costly cleaning and maintenance operations.
Faced with this significant bird-related pressure, Auchan was seeking a solution capable of providing long-term protection for the entire photovoltaic roof.
The solution: a BirdProTech laser bird deterrent
Auchan had already installed AviTrac AVT18S acoustic bird deterrent systems. However, with a population of more than 400 gulls, this solution alone did not provide sufficiently effective protection for the site.
Following a technical audit of the site, conducted by our subsidiary AgriProTech Romania, a laser deterrent solution was recommended.
The LazerTrac® LZT1000, a standalone, programmable laser deterrent, was quickly installed to protect the entire 1.5-hectare roof and permanently reduce the presence of seagulls as well as the associated damage.
A quiet, smart, and autonomous protection system
To ensure optimal coverage of the roof, the LazerTrac® LZT1000 was installed at a high elevation, in the center of the roof, on a two-tiered mounting frame.
This layout allows the laser to precisely scan the entire surface to be protected and avoid obstacles and blind spots.
Before each installation, our teams conduct a technical assessment of the bird problem to determine the optimal positioning of the laser. The goal is to maximize the coverage area and the effectiveness of the deterrence, while taking into account the technical constraints and safety requirements specific to the site.
The results: a more than 95% reduction in bird presence
Less than a year after installing the LazerTrac® LZT1000, the results are significant:

The reduction in bird pressure now allows Auchan to save €20,000 per year on the cleaning and maintenance of its solar panels, while maintaining their efficiency.
